Business firms have other internal relationships that are particularly amenable to informal mediative settlements. Conflicts within partnerships, complaints by minority shareholders of closely held corporations, and quarrels within family-owned businesses all have the combination of legal and emotional overtones to which mediation is particularly well suited.

Besides these naturals, takeovers of smaller businesses by huge corporate acquirers sometimes engender emotional conflicts when the arrangement provides for the continued employment of the smaller concern's former CEO in the new amalgamated venture, in one such instance, the principal shareholder and CEO of the acquired company had taken mediation training. When the acquiring company discharged him and his vice president and sued them both for fraud, the parties agreed to retain a mediator who could deal with both legal and business issues, as well as handle the considerable emotional baggage of the case.

Even though the parties were located in California and New York, they attended a two-day mediation session, which not only settled the dispute but provided a structure for resolving future differences. Since the settlement, the parties have worked out other problems between themselves and vised the same mediator again. As a result, according to a conversation with Marguerite Milhauser, attorney for the acquired company's CEO, the principals "can talk to each other again," and both are avid converts to mediation.
